Cecil’s Mill was originally built as a cotton/textile factory in the 1800’s. Later, it was transformed into a grist mill and saw mill. A small family farm just west of Leonardtown. Haucaya alpacas that have been bred and chosen with an emphasis on fine fiber, correct conformation, and pleasing dispositions. The alpacas at Nobella Alpacas are pleasant to work with and have fine fiber in order to create luxury yarns and end products. The female alpacas are mothers who are able to have easy, uncomplicated births, ample milk supply, and mothering skills to take care of their crias (alpaca babies). Visitors are always welcome! Cradled by Breton Bay, the Potomac River and St. Clements Bay, this 776-acre property of woodlands, wetlands and agricultural fields offers low impact recreational opportunities such as biking, walking, hunting, birding and fishing. Capt. John Smith explored the waters surrounding the property in 1608. Newtowne was the first settlement in the Maryland province after St. Mary’s City. Hunting on Sundays will not be permitted. Goose field blind sites are open Saturdays, Mondays, and Thursdays only. The Three Notch Trail is a non-motorized pedestrian and bicycle trail being constructed on the St. Mary’s County railroad right-of-way. The trail is constructed of asphalt and is 10 feet wide in most sections, with 2 – 3 ft. grass shoulders. The trail in the northern area of the county begins at Deborah Drive (just past the St. Mary’s County line) in Charlotte Hall and runs south to John V. Baggett Park in Laurel Grove for a distance of about eleven miles. The trail in this area provides connections to the Northern Senior Center, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Charlotte Hall Library, St. Mary’s County Farmers’ Market, the St. Mary’s County Welcome Center, various businesses, churches, Mechanicsville Elementary School and Baggett Park. Parking and restrooms along the Charlotte Hall section of the trail can be found at the Northern Senior Center, St. Mary’s County Welcome Center and at the Charlotte Hall Library. Two monuments, one state and one federal, mark the interment site of more than 3,000 prisoners who died at Point Lookout Prison Camp. Names of those who died at Point Lookout are engraved on the federal monument which is the only federal monument erected to the Confederate soldier. The cemetery is located outside of Point Lookout State Park.

Recreational opportunities abound on this picturesque peninsula formed by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Swimming, fishing, boating and camping are just a few of the activities to be enjoyed in this beautiful bay setting. This park’s peaceful surroundings belie its history as the location of a prison camp which imprisoned as many as 52,264 Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. A museum on site recounts this vivid history. A park map is available at park headquarters, the camp office, camp store, and the Civil War Museum/Marshland Nature Center. Built in 1858 and in use until 1942, the granite block and brick structure retains its original upstairs cells where prisoners were once segregated by gender and race. The jail keeper’s quarters downstairs house artifacts that relate county history. A cannon from The Ark, one of two ships that first brought colonists to Maryland, and later used to defend St. Mary’s City, is displayed on the grounds. The museum also serves as a county visitor information center. Special tours and hours are available by advanced arrangement. AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE – Runaway slaves were often held in public jails until their owners retrieved them or they were sold in compensation for the cost of care. Five stories of runaway slaves are connected with the Old Jail. HOURS: Wednesday – Friday: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Buzzy’s is a general store located in St. Mary’s County, Southern Maryland near Pt. Lookout State Park. Buzzy and Jean Ridgell purchased the Store from Jean’s father Harry Raley in 1953. Buzzy operated it until his passing in 2009. His son J. Scott Ridgell is the current owner.

One of the best preserved African-American schoolhouses in the country, The one-room schoolhouse still occupies its original site and has not been significantly altered. The Navy’s aircraft and flight systems have been tested and evaluated at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station since WWII. The Museum is the only naval museum dedicated to aviation research, development, testing, and evaluation. Interior exhibits include a propulsion display, unmanned aerial vehicles (including a fullscale mock-up of the X-47A Pegasus unmanned combat air vehicle), crew system artifacts, ejection seats, radars, and test instrumentation. An outdoor aircraft park displays 21 naval aircraft, and features both the X-32B and X-35C Joint Strike Fighter concept demonstrators tested at Pax River. Fly Mach Combat™ flight simulators, and stop in the Museum’s Flightline Gift Shop, which has the largest collection of aviation themed merchandise in the area. Sotterley Plantation, a National Historic Landmark, has a history dating back to the turn of the 18th century and is one of the oldest museums of its kind in the United States. Many have called Sotterley home over its 300 year history. Some came to prosper; others worked the land, either for wages or under bondage. Sotterley today consists of almost 100 acres of breathtaking beauty on the Patuxent River that includes over six miles of nature trails, Colonial Revival Gardens, and over 20 historic buildings. Guide to Patuxent River Water Trail The Patuxent River is approximately 110 miles long and is the largest river, completely within the state boundary of Maryland. The river corridor is rich in scenic beauty, wildlife, history. Many public parks and launching sites for recreational boating provide additional access for visitors to enjoy the river’s resources. The trail runs through Saint Mary’s, Charles, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard, Anne Arundel, and Calvert Counties The route begins in southern Calvert County and ends in the Triadelphia Reservoir in Montgomery County. Greenwell State Park in St. Mary’s County is on the route. The trail distance is approximately 80 miles. The Patuxent River is the longest river that flows entirely within the State of Maryland. Scenery around the Patuxent ranges from rich marshlands to lush fields, rural landscapes and suburban growth and locations of archaeological and historical significance. With a history dating back to the late 17th century, Summerseat is a 120-acre working farm with a Queen-Anne style house, outbuildings including meat and dairy houses, barns and gardens. Summerseat breeds the only publicly accessible herd of American Buffalo in the region. The farm has other animals, a vineyard and trails including a bluebird trail. Tables and a gazebo are available for picnickers. Check the website for special programs, events, and facilities rental information. Summerseat Farm is open to the public on on the first Saturday of the month May-September.

Situated at the north end of the St. Mary’s River watershed in the center of the county, the park consists of approximately 2,000 acres of land with a 250-acre fishing lake. The relatively flat landscape of St. Mary’s County is not usually thought of as mountain biking terrain; however, the 7.5-mile course encircling the lake at St. Mary’s River State Park is a little known treasure. This course is also available for hiking. Park open daily dawn to dusk April – October, and 10 AM–4 PM November – March. St. Mary’s River State Park is divided into two areas, Site 1 and Site 2. Site 1 included St. Mary’s Lake and has an entrance and parking off Camp Cosoma Road. Site 2 is a wildlands and managed hunting area. Hunting information: 2,200 acres of public hunting lands. This nationally-accredited museum shares the story of Maryland’s founding and traces the route of the first brave English colonists who sailed across the dangerous Atlantic Ocean in two small wooden ships, landing on St. Clement’s Island in March of 1634. A 13-minute orientation film brings the story to life and includes the other interesting details of the people and events that create 370+ years of island history. The island is now a Maryland State Park and offers areas to hike, picnic, and bird watch. A 40-foot cross stands as a memorial to the first colonists who sought religious toleration. A replica of an original lighthouse stands at the south end of the island and is often open for tours. Scenic and serene, the island is available by private boat or by taking the museum’s seasonal weekend water taxi (June through August). MD Route 235 to end of Clarke’s Landing Road – Small landing with boat ramp and minimal parking. Public landings are open from sunrise to sunset. Some things to remember: 1. Landings are closed between sunset and sunrise; with the exception of loading and unloading boats 2. Please do not block ramps, parked vehicles, bulkheads or access to piers 3. Overnight parking, camping, night fishing or open fires are not allowed 4. Obey “No Fishing or Crabbing” signs where posted 5. Do not leave boats or equipment at landing 6. Do not leave residential trash in trash cans 7. No alcohol consumption at landing 8. No glass bottles or containers; no littering 9. Those fishing and crabbing need to move fishing and crabbing lines as boaters use the boat ramps 10. Thank you for being a courteous user of our public landings!

Climb one of the oldest lighthouses on the Potomac River, constructed in 1836. The site was once visited by Washington dignitaries including several U.S. presidents. The six-acre park includes a picnic area, kayak launch, a boardwalk, pier and sandy beach (no fishing or swimming). The museum details the area’s history and also includes an exhibit of the WWII U-1105 Black Panther German submarine, which lies just offshore in an area designated as the state’s first Historic Shipwreck Dive Preserve. The Potomac River Maritime Exhibit includes a collection of of historic wooden boats that once plied the waters of the Chesapeake Bay as well as the watermen’s story. The museum, maritime exhibit and boardwalk are handicap accessible. Call ahead or visit the website for the museum’s seasonal hours of operation, to schedule a group tour or to come by boat. Admission is $7 per adult, $3.50 for senior citizens and military personnel, students 6 to 18, and free for children 5 and under. If the wedding party needs a ride as well, they offer a wagon that accommodates 12 adults. All carriages are pulled by their Clydesdale horses and are sure to turn heads at your event.

Visit the Corn Crib Studio to view Christina Allen’s works of art. Many of her paintings are watercolor landscapes of Southern Maryland. Christina has been a professional artist for 35+ years. She has shown her work in juried regional, national, and invitational international exhibitions. She has written and illustrated an award winning children’s book, A Micro-Chip on My Shoulder, as well as illustrating other books. She lives on Allen’s Heirloom Homestead, a sustainable farm, with her husband, cat, chickens, flock of rare Jersey Buff turkeys, and a flock of sheep. Together they enjoy sustainable gardening by raising much of their own food. Christina finds much inspiration for her artwork in this way of life and with the beautiful Chesapeake Bay around the area. You can find Christina working in her Corn Crib Studio most days. On other days she may be spinning the sheep’s wool, working in the greenhouses, going for a row on the Chesapeake Bay with her husband, or planting in the gardens. The Craft Guild Shop is a co-op of award-winning and juried Maryland artists dedicated to working in one or more of the following categories: basketry, candle-making, ceramics, clay, fiber, furniture making, jewelry, leather, metals, mixed media, natural materials, needlework, paper, photography, polymer/resin, pottery, and stained glass. Because of such a diverse range of local talent, the Craft Guild Shop is able to offer a wide variety of unique handcrafted items available at any time (custom orders can be arranged). The Craft Guild Shop welcomes artists and crafters whose creative handiwork demonstrates stimulating visual appeal, good design, and fine craftsmanship. Before acceptance as a member of the Guild, each person’s work must undergo a jurying process. The artisan will submit three to five representative pieces in a selected media category for examination by a committee of fellow artisans who are seasoned Guild members. The committee awards points based on workmanship, use of materials, design concepts, overall appearance, originality, and/or execution of traditional designs.
